Jan. 21st, 2004 11:03 pmGot to try to ride a segway today.
It's kind of bigger and heavier than I would have thought.
The part about it goes where you lean is only true for backwards and forwards. To turn you actually rotate part of the left handle.
Someone was holding it as I climbed on and off. I don't know what it would be like trying to do so with no help. I suspect it would try to travel either forwards or backwards on me while I did.
As soon as I got on, it was going slightly backwards, the girl handling it said it was because I was nervous and leaning back a bit. So I leaned a little forward and came towards her.
Got a bit of the hang of it and went in a couple of circles on the little coned off track they had there (basically a 12' or so oval).
It was amusing. I would do it again if I had a chance. But I don't think they seem so fantastic as all that hype. Perhaps if I really got to used it to I'd change my mind.
She said it weighs about 80 pounds, so dragging it around somewhere if you weren't riding it would get old. Like if you drove it to work where you park it?
Actually for alternate transport, what I think looks really fun is the kids sneakers with the back wheels. I doubt that I could stand and keep my toes up enough as my back heel tendon is short, but it definitely looks like fun. I wonder if kids get yelled at for skating in the halls at school these days?
