Caves are dark

The types of Ice-age lamps found. Unfortunately not pictures of them.
They would have been used whenever people would have needed a portable light. The authors say they were very easy to make and would have been treated as rather disposable.
Some form of light was needed to paint and view the art in the caves. Indeed many of these have been found in the painted caves.
Article talks also about how the experience of seeing the cave art with these lamps would have been quite different than it is in the caves with modern artificial lighting now.
You would have seen smaller sections and the colors would look different in the lower light levels than in the brighter light levels. Perhaps if the paintings depict stories this would be useful in directing attention to the desired chunk of the story.
