At [livejournal.com profile] phygelus's suggestion we went to the Stanford Theatre for the Seventh Voyage of Sinbad and Jason and the Argonauts. I didn't think there were any of this sort of theater left. Apparently It's a non-profit project of the Packard Foundation. The theater itself is all restored with a fancy ceiling and all, and an organ with organist that rises up between movies and is lowered back out of sight when the movie starts.

The place is pretty huge and had a lot more people there than at any of these other movies I've seen lately. What was weird compared to the other movies is how quiet the audience was. Any of the other audiences I've seen lately would have been laughing at this a lot. I felt sorry for several of the animated beasties, at least the ones with skin. At a certain point Josh started complaining that the Jason movie had severely departed from the Argonautica story.

These movies are fun, Sinbad more so than Jason, but I'm not sure I could call them good.

In between there was an installment of a 1948 Superman serial. We were remarking on how unfit Superman looked. I figured that because of his alien superpowers - maybe he didn't really need to be built like a muscular human... it's not that kind of strength, but it did seem a little odd compared to what you usually see.

If I want to know how Lois gets saved from going over a cliff, I'd have to go next week, but I'm kind of hoping she doesn't get saved, she was just too annoying and stupid in this episode.... Don't completely untie someone when you don't know who he is or why he's tied up!!!

Afterward we wandered around a bit and wound up at Q-Cup. Their site doesn't show enough of a menu to indicate how odd they are... Besides pearl tea, their menu is crepes and bits of fried seafood... that still doesn't quite convey it... well their "veg roll" is a crepe with lettuce, mayonaise and corn... this does taste a bit better than it sounds... now we're getting nearer to conveying it.. The decor is a mix of colors just a few shades too bright to be pastel.

I finally tried pearl tea. It could be nice as an occasional novelty, but I'm not so overwhelmedly in love with it as people who drink the stuff usually seem to be. I'm too tired to say more about any of this, good night.
