Festival Express

magickalmoon, if this doesn't come to Australian theaters, perhaps you could rent it sometime. Or perhaps just renting it is the best thing, but I think you'll want to do that.
-- Festival Express is a recently released movie that was mostly shot in 1970. It's a documentary about a series of 3 mega-concerts in Canada, and the train ride - extended party - jam session that the musicians all had between concerts, with occasional more recently filmed comments by people who were there.
The acts included Janis Joplin, Greatful Dead, The Band, Sha Na Na, The Flying Burrito Brothers and about 10 others.
The Metro (a local weekly) was pretty harsh in its review except for their appreciation of the Janis bits. On KFOG radio, a dj was saying that it was worth seeing for Janis at least. So I went. There were only 12 people in the theater, so don't expect it to stay long.
The non-Janis parts did occasionally seem a little tedious, but there were some definitely amusing comments sprinkled throughout.
It is a real snapshot of that time period and attitudes that were going around. The demands of the crowds in Toronto are just too funny now, especially since there was a period when I was young that I would have thought they sounded good!
I did get a new appreciation for Jerry Garcia. I've never been a 'Dead Head' and only saw them play a few songs each at 2 free concerts about 20 years apart, so I hadn't given him much thought. He shows up quite a bit and comes across as quite likable.
Janis! Wow! She looked a bit unhealthy, but her spirit and presence were just incredible. I've heard recordings of her, I've had Pearl for almost 30 years, but I'd never really seen her in action before. She was just so much more There on stage than anyone else seemed to be. She put everything she had into it.
I left feeling very sad that she died just 3 months later. I wish she could have kept going and that I could have seen her sometime. At the time of this tour I was 10 and hadn't yet heard of any of these people. The first time I heard of Janis was the news report of her death.
oh -- and for those of you who've been talking about "cool kids" lately -- here's an example... Janis was the ultimate opposite of "cool kid" according to ones she went to high school with, but then she became such a definition of "cool kid" later to others who could appreciate her, that decades later she's remembered and missed.
